For a 500MW solar installation in Dubai's desert (ambient temperature reaching 52°C, sand abrasion, and occasional flash flooding), I recommended AA6005-T5 aluminum rails with a 70μm PVDF coating. The critical engineering was the expansion calculation: a 100-meter rail row expands by 420mm from winter night (5°C) to summer peak (55°C). Competitors using steel systems had failures because their expansion joints were undersized. We designed a sliding plate system at every 3rd row interval that accommodates 150mm of thermal movement per cycle—tested through 1,000 thermal cycles with no degradation. For coastal installations, salt spray destroys standard HDG steel within 5 years; our marine-grade AA6061-T6 with anodizing has survived 10+ years in similar environments.
